Bogs through the seasons
Every trail here is worth walking more than once a year.
Spring
Snowmelt and, in Soomaa, the fifth-season floods. Boardwalks can be slippery with ice in the mornings until late April.
Summer
Long evenings, cotton grass and sundew, and mosquitoes. Early mornings are cooler, quieter and less bitey.
Autumn
The best time for colour and fog. Cranberries ripen from September; picking is allowed on most bogs outside strict reserves.
Winter
Frozen bogs are quiet and bright. Stay on marked trails: snow hides open water, and the pools do not freeze evenly.
